I’m Just Saying: Am I really a scumbag?

It seems that no matter what I say in my column I am going to be accused of being a “Marxist”….” in charge of turning CHL into a “left wing rag,” or “a moronic democratic arse” and a lot of other things.  And that’s okay, I often expect strong responses to what I write.

In fact, we have posted all of those comments on CuencaHighLife.com.  We didn’t “censor” them.  Personally, I don’t frankly care if someone wants to stoop to that level to debate an issue.  Because what these posters don’t seem to get is, that it’s the smart well-thought-out critique’s that interest me.  Some of them do make me think a little differently about what I’ve written.  But calling me a Marxist or a stream of anger-laden names, really doesn’t budge me to their belief.

Now, I will tell you that CHL did recently censor a comment posted about me.  Without repeating the entire posting, let’s just say that the person wrote to tell me that I was, and I quote, “a scumbag.”   The rest of his or her message did not offer any substantive observations, not to mention any kinder sentiments.  I’ll leave it at that.

So, did it get censored because as once poster put it, “we are seeing “…an effort ” to silence anyone who disagrees with them”?

No, that’s not why.  It got censored because it made no reference back to the article in question and because many people reported the comment as offensive.  You see, we actually allowed it to be posted, but after further review we decided that it violated our rule for extreme offensiveness and took it down.

Second to that, while I do write this column and it appears in both The Cuenca Dispatch and CuencaHighLife.com, I have nothing to do with approving or disapproving comments posted on CuencaHighLife.com.  The rules as to what is appropriate to post on CHL are the same rules that have been in place for a long time (to the rules, click here).  And, the team that approves posts (yes, several people review comments to make sure that they meet the guidelines) is the same team that has been around for a few years.

With that said, feel free to write what you want about me.  As long as it meets the guidelines that have been in place since long before The Cuenca Dispatch published its first issue, CHL will post it.

Do some things get though the cracks and get published that offend people other than me?  Yes, of course.  And do some things get blocked when they shouldn’t have?  Yes, that probably happens too. I should add, that technical problems with the comments software occasionally prevent comments from posting even after they have been approved and we are working to fix that.

That’s part of putting out a daily news site.  There are a lot of moving parts and never enough time in the day to do them all 100% correctly.  But we try.  Nonetheless, we will make more mistakes and we will most likely sit back and let the attacks on us go by.  And when someone doesn’t like anything about what I write and they call me names, we will most likely let those go by as well.

We do however have responsibility to ALL of our readers to make CHL a site that allows intelligent discourse without threats, aggressive insults (again the “scumbag” post seems to have gone beyond what many readers find acceptable and that violate our posting rules) or personal threats or accusations.  That’s just what we all think is the right thing to do.  So, we’re going to continue to do things the way they have been done for a long time.

Those of you that may see part of your post here, please believe me when I say that I did read your comments and agree with some of what you said.  But some of what you wrote also made my position clearer here.  That being, we allow a LOT of things to be printed on CHL that probably surprise some people.

I’m just sayin.’
