New shopping center promises 250 stores, international brands, and thousands of job opportunities in the heart of Cuenca.
Cuenca’s retail scene is poised for a major transformation with the ongoing construction of Mall del Alto, a high-end shopping center expected to open in 2026. Located on the Cuenca-Azogues highway, across from the well-established Mall del Río, the new development is set to bring an influx of international brands to the city, providing a dynamic new shopping experience for local residents and visitors alike.
A Grand Investment
With an estimated investment of over $50 million, the Mall del Alto will feature 100,000 square meters of retail space. Currently 80% complete, the mall will house more than 250 brands, with 98% of the commercial spaces already leased. According to Juan Fernando Cordero, director of the Ortiz Group, approximately 70% of these brands will be new to Cuenca, providing residents with a diverse range of shopping options not available elsewhere in the city.
Once the civil works are finished in August 2025, commercial spaces will be handed over to retailers for renovation, with the grand opening planned for April 2026. The project is expected to create about 1,500 direct jobs, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.
International Brands Lead the Charge
Among the exciting brands arriving in Cuenca is H&M, which will occupy a 3,000-square-meter flagship store—the largest in the mall. Other global fashion brands such as Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, GAP, and Old Navy will also have dedicated spaces. In addition to fashion, Mall del Alto will feature luxury Spanish labels such as Adolfo Domínguez and Purificación García, offering high-end handbags and apparel that are sure to attract fashion-forward shoppers.
The mall’s diverse mix of stores is expected to make it a significant retail hub for the region, appealing to both locals and tourists.
Entertainment and Dining Options to Attract Families
In addition to its extensive shopping options, Mall del Alto will offer a wide range of entertainment and dining experiences. A key feature will be the 260-meter-long electric vehicle karting track, alongside an immersive bowling alley equipped with augmented reality, lights, and sound effects. The center will also have a playground for both adults and children, offering recreational activities for all ages.
The dining experience will reflect Cuenca’s culinary culture, with both a traditional food court and a gourmet area offering restaurant terraces with scenic city views. The inclusion of a gym and recreational areas further emphasizes the mall’s commitment to providing a well-rounded experience for visitors.
A New Chapter for Ortiz Group
The opening of Mall del Alto marks the Ortiz Group’s most ambitious project to date. Known for its Coral Hypermarkets and other successful ventures, the group reported a sales revenue of $527.8 million in 2024, making it one of the largest companies in the Azuay region. With the addition of this retail complex, the Ortiz Group continues to solidify its place at the forefront of Cuenca’s commercial and economic development.
Mall del Alto is more than just a shopping center—it is a reflection of Cuenca’s growing appeal as a regional retail destination, and its opening will undoubtedly make a significant impact on the local economy for years to come.

Hopefully a Taco Bell
It sounds very high-end, very expensive.
8 months from when civil works are done until the stores are ready to open?
I hope they include benches for us old folks to rest. Missing in the new Mega Maxi.
