Volunteer fireman claim their Constitutional rights are being infringed upon

Yesterday, representatives of the branch of volunteers of the Fire Department of Cuenca filed a complaint with the Constitutional Court, asking that the Organic Code of Security and Public Control Entities, COESCOP, be repealed. They say it affects their constitutional rights.

The leader and assistant chief of the volunteer firefighters of Cuenca, Felipe Camacho, indicated that the Code ignores the merits of volunteering and prevents them from being promoted within the institution, while also limiting their functions.

The lawyer of the plaintiffs, Sebastián López, assured that the Code goes against the rights of the volunteer firemen so that “it must be expelled from the national legal order”.

Camacho said that the initiative has the support of more than 200 volunteers from Cuenca, as well as branches of firefighters from various cantons of the country.
